Artist’s Bio :: Alan Stacy :: Yugen Photography

 

My interest in photography started at age 15 when my parents succumbed to birthday requests to buy a Minolta 35mm SLR directly from Japan. After my Father built a darkroom in the family basement, I was hooked for life on capturing light on film and paper. I attended Rochester Institute of Technology for courses in Photographic Chemistry and Instrumentation hoping to be part of JPL and the exploration of space through imaging. Alas, after realizing that the mind of a photographer (at least mine) was far different than the mind of an engineer, I left school to pursue a career in graphic arts and design, spending years in darkroom labs under the glow of red lights, juggling developing trays.

 

Branching off into technology writing proved to be a worthy career change at the advent of the personal computer, while relegating photography to a wistful sideline. More forks in the road brought me back to digital photography; the study and appreciation of Japanese art, haiku, and calligraphy; and the practice of zazen. This eclectic mixture culminated in the current exploration of the yugen aesthetic and the resulting Ghost Flower Collection. Go figure.
